Brooklawn History

1855 - In the mid 1800’s the area which is now Brooklawn was part of a larger municipality called Center Township.  It included 10 other surrounding towns (Haddon Heights, Magnolia, Barrington, Tavistock, Gloucester City, Bellmawr, Runnemede, Mount Ephraim, Haddonfield, and Lawnside.)

1919 – During the first World War, 451 homes were built by the government on this land to house the shipyard workers in Gloucester City.  The town was known as Noreg Village at this time.

1923 – After the war, the government auctioned off these 451 homes to the general public.

1924 – Noreg Village was incorporated as an independent municipality in April of 1924.  The name was changed to Brooklawn.

1926 – The first school was built and called the Brooklawn Public School.  It was later named Alice Costello School. 

1930 – Brooklawn foreclosed on 58 of the wood frame homes and rented them out.  This provided a considerable portion of the borough’s income.  Brooklawn still owns some of these homes today.

1925-1930 – Brooklawn Fire Company was located on Browning Road and had one Fire Engine

1933 – Brooklawn sold the Borough Hall to the American Legion

1940 – Brooklawn started a one man Police force.

1952 – American Legion Baseball team had its inaugural season.

1978 – Brooklawn’s current Borough Hall was built.

1991 – Brooklawn American Legion Baseball team won its first American Legion World Series Title.  They won again in 2001 and 2013.

1993 - Mario Riccobene, 60, a mobster-turned-informant, is killed in an ambush outside the Brooklawn Diner.

1994 - Working with state police, admitted con man James Lynch wears a wire and tapes Vincent Pagano bragging about his mob connections at Ponzio's Diner in Brooklawn. 


At the 2010 United States Census, there were 1,955 people, 759 households, and 516.1 families residing in the borough. The population density was 3,974.6 inhabitants per square mile. There were 806 housing units at an average density of 1,638.6 per square mile. The racial makeup of the borough was 87.88% (1,718) White, 5.32% (104) Black or African American, 0.10% (2) Native American, 2.20% (43) Asian, 0.00% (0) Pacific Islander, 2.05% (40) from other races, and 2.46% (48) from two or more races. Hispanic or Latino of any race were 6.29% (123) of the population.

There were 759 households of which 30.8% had children under the age of 18 living with them, 43.0% were married couples living together, 18.3% had a female householder with no husband present, and 32.0% were non-families. 24.8% of all households were made up of individuals and 8.2% had someone living alone who was 65 years of age or older. The average household size was 2.58 and the average family size was 3.08.

In the borough, 23.4% of the population were under the age of 18, 8.9% from 18 to 24, 29.8% from 25 to 44, 26.7% from 45 to 64, and 11.2% who were 65 years of age or older. The median age was 36.9 years. For every 100 females there were 93.8 males. For every 100 females age 18 and over, there were 89.6 males.
